In Case of Emergency

Every corporation has emergencies. Some manage by them, others prepare for them. You or your management can, no doubt, assemble a list of possible things that could go wrong. Make that list now - before you go on vacation. Then plan what you would do if each of the emergencies on that list suddenly came to pass. What media would you choose to communicate? What vendor would you call? How much time will it take to place the solution into operation? Have these answers ready.

One of the best ways to prepare for the worst emergencies is to make sure your company identifies key executives to act as spokespersons. Then urge these executives to take a "media training" course. And when you think of "the media", think of your own employees (and their bargaining units) as "media" as well. Often, communication with your own employees is the single most effective and economical communications you can initiate - good times and bad.
